As my husband and I were getting ready to wind down and retire after a long day, he remarked that his stance of Christians’ civic and voting responsibility was causing a stir with certain of his co-workers. Ones responses was,
“Christians should just follow Jesus example. He never told us to be involved in politics.”
Sound familiar? Mark and I both share the same ideologies and deeply revere the foundations that our godly forefathers incepted. The past year, I’ve been feeling the the weight of the disgraces permeating our once glorious nation and that weight has drawn me to the daily discipline of interceding in prayer on behalf of my beloved country. I asked God to show me how He felt about politics, voting and our responsibility as his peculiar, chosen and special people. After many restless nights praying about this, he finally compelled me to dig deeply into His word.
My Bible opened to Deuteronomy 16:18-20
18 “You shall appoint for yourself judges and officers in all your [a]towns which the Lord your God is giving you, according to your tribes, and they shall judge the people with righteous judgment. 19 You shall not distort justice; you shall not [b]be partial, and you shall not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of the wise and perverts the words of the righteous. 20 Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue, that you may live and possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
Exodus 23:6-9 (NIV)
6 “Do not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits. 7 Have nothing to do with a false charge and do not put an innocent or honest person to death, for I will not acquit the guilty.
8 “Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent.
9 “Do not oppress a foreigner; you yourselves know how it feels to be foreigners, because you were foreigners in Egypt.
These two sections declare that we are to elect and be involved in all the complex and pressing issues that assail our families, communities and nation! Many Christians use the excuse of “separation of church and state” when there is no such term forbidding us to be a part of the election process of officials. We had better get our information together before we make excuses. If we continue to allow atheists and liberals to edit and re-write or Constitution, we will end up enslaved like the Israelites of the old testament.
Presently, a great debate rages regarding Mitt Romney’s Mormon beliefs. This could divide evangelicals and could bring about the re-election of president Obama.
I’d like to talk a little about the law of religion and the law of grace. The Bible is always our guide whenever we are faced with very difficult decisions, so the following discourse about Jesus should be a guideline on how to vote this November election.
The Pharisees loved to try to trap Jesus in a debate regrading any action that seemed unceremonious or outside the parameters of the law. In a certain occasion:
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus was able to straddle beautifully the boundaries of old testament law with the present cultural and legals issues of His day.
If we are presented with a tragedy and victims are suffering, do we rescue them if it happens on the Sabbath, or do we turn away like the priest and the Levite during their travels when faced with a half-dead robbery victim?. If we are faced with two candidates, both who we deem unsuitable to represent and preside over our nation, which do we vote for? Hopefully, he should abide by the most important commandments and things that are dear to God’s heart. We know God said not to kill. Does the presidential candidate support abortion and the man and woman as a married couple? Last but not least does He bless Israel?
Since the dawn of Adam and Eve have we looked for loopholes to avoid the responsibilities God has assigned us. But God will hold us accountable to every minute thought, action and deed. If we choose not to vote, we have still made a decision to stand for nothing.
“For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass
away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until
all is accomplished.Jesus said in Mat 5:18
I pray Pastors will be like Ezra and Nehemiah, bringing out the law to remind the people of God’s promises and covenant. Jehoshaphat also gathered the assembly and revival was renewed under his kingship. When the law is revived and taught and pastors teach their flock how to balance the law with grace, we will enjoy the blessings of Yahweh. Whenever the Israelites were enslaved and abused by the heathen who dominated them and they cried out to God for deliverance, God sent them a king after his own heart. If Gods’ people, the church continue to allow liberals and atheists to edit our Constitution and Bill of Rights and remove God’s name from our public buildings, God will remove His hedge of protection. We should not be surprised at terrorist attacks when we ask God to remove himself from our democracy!
Last night, I was reminded of America’s fallen legacy as I watched documentaries of the destruction of the World Trade Centers on History Channel. What a tragedy and what a harsh lesson we Americans should have learned. This was a harbinger of what happens to a society that disobeys and rebels against God. Let us come to our senses and know that God’s commandments are for our protection and blessing. Without them, there would be anarchy, chaos, murder and slavery.
People, wake up! Let wisdom and humility towards God rule your lives and the decisions you make for the upcoming elections. Pastors, Rabbis and priests, be bold and uncompromising as you share God’s heart and assist your flock to choose the leaders closest to God’s ideal…and God help America as she struggles to get back on track.
